Turkey strides the continents of Europe and Asia and is a country with a rich past and diverse present.
From the beautiful beaches of the Aegean to the filmic landscape of Cappadocia and the towering mountains of the east, Turkey is a land full of ancient wonders and cosmopolitan culture.
The capital Ankara is the modern heart of Turkey – the base of Ataturk’s resurgent state – and combines the old and new in a way that epitomises the country. Bilkent, in the Çankaya district, is the site of the most prestigious properties in the capital.
Still, if you want the full Turkish experience – and are attracted by the Ottoman and Byzantine heritage – then Istanbul is the city for you. This has one foot in each of Turkey’s continents – either side of the Bosphorous Strait – and as a result has always been of strategic importance (it was formerly known as Constantinople) throughout history.
The iconic Hagia Sophia is one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, but is far from the only wonder within Istanbul – a city teeming with life among bathhouses, bazaars, mosques, museums and palaces.
The mansions of the Bosphorous Strait, in the Yeniköy district, display the sort of class you’d expect from a capital with such rich heritage.Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey, offers a huge contrast – with a more laid-back feel to this busy Aegean port. Beaches, hot springs, top class cuisine and an annual art festival make this an attractive destination – and the Buca district is still home to many 19th Levantine mansions for those eager to snap up a slice of Turkey’s past.
