Washington Town of Wauconda For Sale on eBay
March 30, 2010 - Washington
"Why buy a house when you can OWN YOUR OWN TOWN!" asks the eBay auction for Wauconda, a small town in eastern Washington.
Complete with its own post office, restaurant, gas station and four-acre owner's ranch, this mountain resort near the Canadian border is being sold by Daphne Fletcher, who is "tired and ready to retire".
Wauconda's been around for a while. Fletcher says it was a wild west little mining town about 100 years ago and at one time there was approximately 1,000 people in the town.
But when the gold rush ended in tiny Wauconda the miners and camp followers that came with the rush left town.
"When the gold busted, the people kind of left," Fletcher said.
By 1920 nearly everyone in town was gone except the post office. "The post office has been in operation the entire time," Fletcher said.
Bidding for the town has already exceeded the reserve price of $359,000, with the auction due to finish on 2 April 2010. International bidders are said to be welcome.
However, the deal does not include the community hall or the school building.
According to the Web site, taxes for the entire property are $2,048 annually.
The auction is open until Friday, but a bid of $495,000 will be an automatic deal. See the eBay listing here.
