Brunei is a 20 minute flight away from Kota Kinabalu. Perth, Australia can be reached in 5 hours via Brunei. One can also drive to Brunei, Miri, Kuching and even into Indonesia (Kalimantan). There are excellent road and ferry systems in Borneo.
The highest mountain in Malaysia, Mt. Kinabalu, can be reached in 4 hours and there is access to the world class diving island of Sipadan by flight and/or road and then boat. Within 3.5 hours, world class rafting on the Padas River can be enjoyed. Kota Kinabalu, with its superb Italian restaurants, shopping and night life, is a pleasant 2.5 hours drive away.
For those who enjoy being on the sea, as well as looking at it, ocean going sailing boats frequent Kudat en route to Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Honk Kong, Singapore, and Kota Kinabalu.
