Property Description

THE ST. EWOUD AND ST. ELISABETH GUESTHOUSE

The Oeverstraat is close to the old harbour of Wijk bij Duurstede. The Oeverstraat was the access road to Wijk bij Duurstede until the city expansion around the year 1447. Today, this historic street still gives you the pompous feeling of yesteryear. Walking through the street, you will breathe in all its history. It was around the year 1400 that Willem van Abcoude founded the St. Ewoud and St. Elisabethgasthuis at number 21. A charity where the elderly, sick and poor were housed and cared for. There was also a special room for clergymen who visited the city. In addition, a short stay was also possible for travellers visiting the city.
Food and shelter were available to everyone for one night - unless they were well paid - and then went on to transit again.

The building complex has retained much of its original medieval character. Like the bell tower on top of the saddle roof which can be seen from a distance even outside Wijk. The facade has a plaster layer and spacious sliding windows. The original infirmary was located on the first floor and contains magnificent 15th-century architectural elements such as beams with key pieces and pear bead profiles. The chapel and north wing were probably also used as an infirmary.

This attractive object is ideal for living and working in a special setting. Due to the generous dimensions and the various rooms on the ground floor, this object offers many possibilities, including for retail and office. This spacious city villa is in excellent condition. Peace and privacy are guaranteed in the city garden.

Wijk bij Duurstede is centrally located and easily accessible via several N-roads and motorways A2 and A12. The attractive settlement town has a rich history and has all day amenities and cozy restaurants. The city park, the park of Castle Duurstede and the Lower Rhine for wonderful recreation are within walking distance.

Until 1970, the complex was inhabited by elderly people and then to live and work. Are you the next occupant or user of this historic place in the middle of the city of Wijk bij Duurstede?

Through an 18th-century entrance gate, the entrance is accessible through a stately double front door. The impressive foyer with wooden staircase and Belgian bluestone floor provides access to all rooms. At the front there are two spacious rooms, both with a cozy fireplace with traditional clean masonry and special views to the hall. The former regent's room to the left is equipped with a wooden floor and historical details such as a vault with ornamental ornamentation. The spacious room on the right has windows with characteristic cross-bar frames, a playful level difference and partly a wooden floor. The robust original wooden beamed ceiling has been preserved in several rooms. Currently, the ground floor is used as a shop/studio and has previously been used to keep the office.

At the rear is the chapel situated which has a beautiful marble floor and attractive pointed arched chapel windows that provide plenty of light. The adjacent space in the north wing is due to the generous dimensions suitable for many purposes and has a gray cast floor. The space was previously used for meeting and teaching sessions and is therefore very suitable for this purpose. On the north side there is also a pantry and a double toilet. The walls on the ground floor are finished with stucco.

First floor
Through the wide staircase you reach the spacious landing, with a cast floor and a double toilet. The two rooms at the front are currently used as bedroom and living room, but formerly as office space. Because of the large size, the rooms are multi-purpose for living or working. The spacious room on the left has a characteristic wooden floor and provides access to the storage space above the north wing.
The room on the right has a lot of light and from the windows with attractive wooden cross-bar frames you have a view of the mill and the city garden. As on the ground floor, the beamed ceiling is beautifully visible on the first floor and the walls are finished with stucco.

Above the chapel there is a room that used to be used as a library. The beautiful wooden barrel vaults have remained in sight. The technical installations are located in a separate room.

Second floor
Through a staircase is the second floor accessible where an independent apartment is located. Both the bedroom and the living room have generous dimensions. The living room overlooks the high ridge with traditional beams and is equipped with a kitchen unit and a loft with storage space. The bathroom is equipped with a sink, toilet and shower room.
