The City of Cambridge, which is well known for its educational excellence, cultural heritage and scientific advances lies 15 miles to the west and offers a wider range of shops and restaurants. The market town of Bury St Edmunds with its historic cathedral lies 18 miles to the east.

Description

History

The Exning Estate was purchased in 1919 by William James Tatum, a ship owner from Cardiff who later became first Lord Glanely. He formed the Atlantic Shipping & Trading Company taking 'coal out' to Italy and bringing 'grain home' to Europe from the black sea.

Lord Glanely had a passion for race horses and was a distinguished owner who won all five of the Classic races. The Estate was purchased to house his collection of racehorses, both breeding and racing.

Lord Glanely was killed in 1942 in the second world war with no surviving heirs and so the Estate passed to the Gibson family.

Simon Gibson was known as an extremely philanthropic patron to the many charities and trusts he supported. He was an enthusiastic and successful racehorse owner and breeder following in the footsteps of Lord Glanely whose horse Grand Parade, won the 1919 Derby and is buried on the Estate. Simon Gibson passed away in 2021.
