AOL co-founder Steve Case has sold Merrywood, the Northern Virginia estate that was also a childhood home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, for $43 million to the government of Saudi Arabia.
The sale, which closed last week, may be a record for the most expensive home ever sold in the Washington, D.C., area, according to real-estate agents. Records list the buyer as the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The couple released a statement about the sale through a spokeswoman: “We enjoyed living at Merrywood for the past 13 years, and we hope the new owner will appreciate the property as much as we did.”
The previous record for the most expensive home-sale transaction in the region was Robert and Elena Allbritton’s 2007 purchaseof the Bowie-Sevier mansion in Georgetown for$24.56 million, according to Washington Business Journal.
