The residents of Peritheia moved up there to escape the pirates several centuries ago and moved back down when it was safe, abandoning their homes. Palia Perithia is now a preserved village and an indicative example of Venetian architecture with houses made of stone. This village is now a “Designated Area of Natural Beauty” and has been established as “A Protected Heritage Site'.
