In a place to the south of the island is the town of Es Migjorn Gran, formerly called San Cristóbal.It originated around the year 1769 thanks to the effort of a group of men from Ferreries guided by Cristóbal Barber, from whom the original hermitage took its name around which the quiet little town was formed. This is where Don Francisco Camps Mercadal was born and practiced his profession as a doctor, a notable historian and folklorist, a patient investigator of the customs, stories, and songs of the rural sector. The municipality of Es Migjorn Gran is the region in all of the Balearic Islands richest in megalithic monuments, with a density of 5 prehistoric remains per km2; as the parish priest from the beginning of the last century wrote with graphic phrase, the entire municipality is a talayot. Among the main remains of the past stand out the grand Cova des Colom, the size of a cathedral; the hypostyle hall of Binigaus and the colossal talayot of Sant Agustí Vell, whose wide chamber is of a unique singularity in archaeology. The beaches of Santo Tomas and Binigaus are also within the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran.The town has a series of hiking routes along the Cami de Cavalls, as well as a circular route of 2.8 km that surrounds the town to admire the typical orchards and local customs.
