He sailed the ocean blue to Huntington, Long Island some time in the 1630's to gain political and religious freedom and helped to colonize America. In 1725, his great-grandson, Benjamin Brush moved to Greenwich CT where he and his descendants continued in their ancestor's footsteps and became one of the founding families of Greenwich. They were staunch supporters of the American Revolution, being involved in several skirmishes against the Loyalists. Over the next two centuries, they became integral to the town's growth, serving as postmasters, cultivating farmland, operating local stores, and managing significant tracts of land near today's downtown. In 1905, a year marked by national growth, prosperity, and rapid railroad expansion, Greenwich became increasingly accessible to New York City professionals, and architectural trends took off as families sought refined country estates. That same year, Joseph Brush, a direct descendant, built the stately Victorian residence at 50 North Street, then part of a larger Brush estate that included stables, chicken coops, guest housing, servant quarters and formal gardens. Beyond his role as a builder, Joseph also ran the Brush Coal, Wood & Lumber Co. on Greenwich Harborsupplying essential materials for a rapidly growing community. Today, the home endures as a living artifact of Greenwich's architectural and civic heritagetimeless in design and rooted in the story of a family that quite literally helped build the town. Some of the notable contributions by the Brush Family to Greenwich are: Greenwich Library Greenwich Hospital Greenwich Academy Brush Memorial Chapel in the Second Congregational Church Stanwich Congregational Church
