Micklegate is most famous for Micklegate Bar, one of the four main gateways in the York city walls. It historically served as the main entrance for travellers from the south and held ceremonial importance, requiring monarchs to dismount and seek permission to enter.

York railway station is less than half a mile away and offers regular services to major cities including Manchester, Edinburgh and London with some journeys taking less than two hours to Kings Cross. The A64 ring road is about three miles from the city centre giving access to Leeds, the A1(M) and the wider motorway network.
