Mount Stores in Pleshey holds historical significance as part of the ancient motte-and-bailey castle that once stood there. The castle, with its large motte (mound) and surrounding bailey (inner courtyard), was a prominent feature of Pleshey for centuries. The castle itself was eventually demolished, but the motte and the 15th century red-brick bridge remain. The 'Mount Stores' name likely refers to the storage areas or buildings associated with the castle.

Pleshey is an historic small village to the northwest of Chelmsford. It is built around the site of a former motte and bailey castle which was once the ancestral home of Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex and one of the 25 Magna Carta barons. For a long time an important place in English history, Pleshey is mentioned in Shakespeare's Richard II with the line "With all good speed at Plashy (sic) visit me." Pleshey was also the birthplace of Mary de Bohun, first wife of Henry IV and the mother of the future King Henry V.

At the hub of the community is the Holy Trinity Church and the village hall. A general store, post office and primary school are all in the nearby village of Great Waltham together with the renowned Galvin Green Man pub/restaurant. Primary schools are nearby at Ford End and Little Waltham.

The city of Chelmsford, about 7 miles away, is the county town of Essex and offers a wide choice of shopping, restaurants, bars and sports facilities and is also on the main line into London Liverpool Street.

Pleshey falls within the catchment of some exceptional schools including Chelmer Valley High School (comprehensive). King Edward Grammar School (boys), Chelmsford County High School for Girls, Felsted and its well-known independent school and just 4.5 miles away and New Hall School are also within easy reach.

Description

Mount Stores occupies an attractive location in the centre of the village. The property, which is Grade II listed, dates to the late 18th century and is timber-framed and plastered. It has been comprehensively restored in recent years and now offers light and versatile accommodation over three floors. Behind the house is a private courtyard which includes a red-brick detached former bakers' cottage, unmodernised, with adjoining barns and a walled garden.

The house, which is approaching 3,000 sq ft, has three floors and a basement cellar. Over the past seven years, a comprehensive programme of restoration has transformed the property, providing light-filled accommodation and a marriage of period features with new kitchen, bathrooms, floorings and décor.

The central hall, also used as a snug, contains a floor-to-ceiling red-brick fireplace with log burner and is complemented with an oak floor. An inner hallway separates a cloakroom and fitted utility/boot room, which has a door out to the courtyard. On the right-hand side of the house are two reception rooms - one used as a study with double doors out to the garden. The front reception room features a stone fireplace incorporating a log burner. At the opposite end of the house a kitchen/breakfast room has 'pocket-style' doors providing an opening into a family/dining room, creating a 38 ft room, The kitchen is bespoke, finished with Shaker-style units in light heritage colours wrapped around an island with breakfast bar. This room is dual-aspect with double doors out to the courtyard.

A wide-tread staircase rises to the first floor. There are five generous bedrooms (two en suite). The principal bedroom contains wall-to-wall built-in wardrobes and a large en suite bath/shower room, and all the rooms have village or garden vistas. On the second floor are two further bedroom and a useful eaves storage cupboard.

Outside
The plot is square-shaped with lawns wrapping around three sides. At the centre of the plot is a large, enclosed courtyard which provides hardstanding parking and contains a range of useful outbuildings. Of special note is a red-brick cottage-style building, including an original baker's oven, a first floor and attached single-storey barns. On the opposite side of the courtyard is a detached outbuilding with two store rooms and a cloakroom.
