Location

Medmenham is delightfully rural yet perfectly positioned for access to both Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, being 3.5 miles and 4.5 miles respectively.

The towns of Marlow and Henley offer an eclectic mix of local independent and national retailers. There are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants around the towns suited for any occasion. Both towns are situated on the banks of the River Thames and the Thames Path follows the river through the towns.

Just outside the town centres, the area opens out to glorious rolling countryside and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Outdoor pursuits are numerous, as are golf, football, cricket and rugby clubs. For commuters, both towns have train stations to Paddington (via Maidenhead and/or Twyford) and the M40 and M4 motorways are accessed from the A404(M). A comprehensive range of private and state schooling options in the area include Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, Wycombe Abbey, Caldicot Preparatory School and some excellent schools in the Maidenhead and Henley area.

Description

Monks Cottage is a delightful cottage positioned on the corner of an L-shaped terrace of Grade II-listed cottages, on one of the area’s most popular roads. Ferry Lane is a no-through lane of pretty, mostly character homes that leads down to the river Thames, in a highly desirable setting between Marlow and Henley. The cottages dates back to 1898 and were originally built as part of the Medmenham Abbey from whitewashed dressed chalk. The characterful appearance extends to decorative barge boards, wood mullioned windows and tall, brick Tudor-style chimneys. The ornate studded front door opens to an equally characterful interior, featuring built-in cabinetry, beamed ceilings and an open fireplace. Heritage colours complement the period character, while modern additions elevate the décor scheme.

The ground floor accommodation comprises a sitting room and a generously proportioned open plan kitchen/dining/family room. The latter includes a kitchen island/breakfast bar, an AGA stove and plenty of built-in storage. The front terrace leads to a lawned garden which is well enclosed by mature hedges providing a high degree of privacy and bisected by a brick path leading to a pedestrian gate. A variety of trees and deep borders provide colour and interest throughout the seasons.

Directions

From Marlow town centre head southwest out of the town along Henley Road (A4155) for about three miles. The village of Medmenham is clearly signposted, with the turning to Ferry Lane at the centre of the village opposite the phone box. Proceed for 0.3 miles where the property will be seen on the left-hand side.
