Location

Netley Castle is located in Old Netley which is 1.4 miles from Hamble and 0.8 miles from the centre of Netley. Old Netley is situated on the south coast of Hampshire, on the east side of the city of Southampton. It is flanked on the one side by the ruins of Netley Abbey and on the other by the Royal Victoria Country Park. The oldest part of Netley retains the feel of an old fashioned and quaint village with some traditional small shops and rows of colourful terrace cottages. It is located along the shore of Southampton Water with a shingle beach and Weston Sailing Village nearby. There are two schools, including Netley Abbey Infants’ School and a County Junior School, together with a local Church. A railway station at Old Netley offers services to Southampton and Portsmouth.

Description

Netley Castle was built as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defences in c1542 from stone from the recently dissolved Netley Abbey and was visited by Queen Elizabeth I. It was transformed in the 1880’s to a Victorian Gothic style castle, adding the castellated wings and towers on each side. In c1832 Netley Castle was the subject of a series of sketches by JMW Turner. In 2000/1 the castle was converted into ten luxury apartments. The apartment is exceptionally well appointed and comprises a delightful sitting room with central fireplace feature and doors out on to a balcony which offers some fabulous views out over Southampton water. The kitchen/breakfast room is well equipped with a number of fitted appliances and a bespoke range of fitted oak units comprising cupboard and drawer sections with quartz granite worksurfaces over. A family room/study is a really versatile space being formerly the main bedroom adjacent to a separate cloakroom/shower room. This room is great for everyday living and relaxing and could be a formal dining room if that is one’s preference. The principal bedroom comes with en suite bathroom, fitted wardrobes and there are views out over the grounds and Southampton water. The guest bedroom also has en suite shower room with views over the front lawn. OUTSIDE
The Castle is approached via a set of electric gates which lead to a sweeping driveway to the front of the building. The communal grounds are mature and well cared for and extend to approximately 3.4 acres and create a wonderful backdrop to the building, with a large area of lawn to the front. The original portion of the Castle has a Great Hall, which as mentioned previously, can be used by all 10 apartments. The garage for the apartment, with a boarded storage loft above, has its own electricity supply and is part of a block with a remotely operated door. In addition to the garage there is ample car parking for residents and guests. Under the balcony is additional outdoor storage. The grounds have two secure gates with direct access to the beach.
