GRACIE MANSION
Built by Archibald Gracie in 1799, Gracie Mansion is one of the oldest surviving wood structures in Manhattan. Robert Moses convinced city authorities to designate the house as the official residence of the mayor and in 1942 Fiorello La Guardia and his family moved in, describing it as New York's "little White House." Just northwest of Gracie Mansion John Jacob Astor also had a country estate.
