Location

Forest Hill Cottage lies close to the Wiltshire/Hampshire borders in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and lies within the Chutes which are well-known for their rolling countryside and marvelous scenery with excellent walks and bridleways. Lower Chute has the popular pub, The Hatchett, compressive facilities can be found in Andover which has a Waitrose and a regular farmers market and is also easily accessible to the market towns of Marlborough and Hungerford.

Communications are excellent, there are trains from Andover to Waterloo and Hungerford to London Paddington. The A303 is within easy access and provides fast road access to the West Country and London via the M3.

A number of schools nearby including Farleigh, Marlborough College, Downe House, St Mary’s Calne as well as local primary school in the nearby village of Vernham Dean.

Description

Forest Hill Cottage is the most attractive period country cottage which occupies a stunning location and has been in the same ownership for the last 30 years. During this time the current owners have thoughtfully and sympathetically renovated the cottage with great emphasis to preserve the original charm and character of the cottage.

Throughout the cottage there are numerous exposed timbers and inglenook fireplace to the snug. From the reception hall/garden room, the hallway leading to the drawing room which has a gas fire adjacent to which is the dining room which has French windows out to the garden. Beyond this is the kitchen with AGA and walk-in larder as well as a door that opens to the vegetable garden lies the front of the cottage. Beyond the kitchen is the snug with its open inglenook fire which is fitted with a wood burning stove and lastly on the ground floor is the study with its fitted desk and bookshelves and from here the door opens into the garden.

On the first floor the principal bedroom has a wonderful vaulted ceiling adjacent is the dressing room and bathroom which also a vaulted ceiling. This room is well-fitted with extensive range of wardrobes and there is a roll top bath.
In the original part of the cottage there are two further bedrooms both of which had vaulted ceilings with a Jack and Jill bathroom again with roll-top bath. There is a further bedroom with access via a secondary staircase some 25 foot in length and again has vaulted ceiling and wonderful views over the adjoining countryside. There is scope within this bedroom to create its own bathroom. Externally, there is a wonderful guest accommodation which comprises of a bedroom with doors out to the garden and to one corner is an adjoining shower room, adjacent is a garage and garden store.

Gardens

The gardens are without doubt the most spectacular feature of Forest Hill Cottage. The partly walled garden has with numerous well-stocked rose, shrubs and herbaceous beds. Immediately adjacent to the house is a terrace which steps up to areas of lawn. The cottage is adorned by numerous mature climbing shrubs including wisteria, clematis as well as roses to name but a few. To the front of the cottage, there is a prolific vegetable garden with raised beds with a central walk way with steel arches adorned by a variety of climbing shrubs as well. Towards the end of the vegetable garden there is a further area of lawn with small terrace from which there are views over the adjoining paddock land.
