Location

Looking westwards from St Breward, the views reach across the Camel valley, woodlands and forestry, farms and villages all the way to the North Coast. The village is the gateway to Bodmin moor, which starts just steps away from the cottage, so is the perfect place to begin an exploration of the most scenic sites such as Rough Tor and Bronn Wennili; the ancient earthwork known as King Arthur's Hall; Delphi Bridge and Bradford Bridge, both of which span the De Lank river and are popular picnic and swimming spots on hot days. The evidence of the area's granite mining past is extensive with the most important quarry, De Lank, still producing granite of very high quality.

Consequently, the traditional architecture of the village, from large public buildings such as the parish church to simple cottages, share a uniformity of high-quality stonework. The Old Dairy is a perfect example and is just a short walk from village amenities including a shop and post office, the 15th Century parish church, village hall and the popular Old Inn Pub. Other local amenities include the village primary school, football ground and children's playground.

Description

The cottage is entered from an enclosed courtyard, with the entrance being in the modern extension, a cedar and stone clad enhancement to the original granite cottage. A large window lights the space and the original entry, the door surround being beautifully cut granite, an original historic feature. The hallway and kitchen feature a flagstone floor using the original stone from the Old Dairy building. The kitchen is fitted with handmade bespoke free standing oak units and a Belfast sink and there is ample dining space. Stairs rise to a most attractive first floor sitting room, featuring a wood burner, wooden floor and a stable door to granite steps down to the road. This room is full of natural light with windows to the east and west and two Velux panels.

Downstairs and across the hall is a very spacious double bedroom which has patio doors out to the courtyard and a pretty view of the spring flowers. Sunlight also streams in from south facing windows and this is a very pleasant room. There is a large useful hall cupboard which is plumbed for a washing machine. Adjoining, is the impressively large, high ceilinged shower room, tiled throughout and very practical as well as attractive, with high quality fittings, such as a marble basin on a wooden base and an electric towel rail, as well as underfloor heating.

Modern panel electric radiators provide heating on both floors.
The overall impression, throughout, is of a very attractive, modern interior within a fascinating, traditionally built cottage.

The Old Dairy is beside the lane that leaves or enters St Breward Churchtown, the second house from the end or from the beginning, depending on direction of travel. Granite steps from the road remain from when it was an agricultural building. It is well known for the vintage metal 'Safety First' AA sign, indicating distances to Blisland, Camelford and London.

Entry is through a pedestrian gate into the neighbours' gravel parking bay and immediately to the right a high wooden gate into The Old Dairy's charming, enclosed, paved courtyard with secure wooden fencing providing security and privacy. Granite terraces create raised flower beds for spring flowers and shrubs. This garden is a suntrap on a sunny day and protected from winds. The open moor is a just few metres from the cottage, the pub and church likewise, in the opposite direction.
