Ferne House sits off a small lane in the popular village of Highclere. The village is well known for its castle and is surrounded by stunning countryside designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is excellent walking, cycling and riding in the area and an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways such as the Wayfarers Walk, as well as the Kennet and Avon Canal, the North Hampshire Downs including Watership Down and the Bourne Valley. The village has a pretty church, whilst nearby Woolton Hill has a local shop, Post Office and primary and junior schools. Highclere is well placed for access to the A34, and therefore the M4 and south the A303/M3. Newbury lies 5.3 miles to the north and has a broader provision of shops and amenities including a mainline railway station with regular services to London Paddington, Reading and the West Country.

In the wider area, there is racing at Newbury, Salisbury and Bath and fishing on the Kennet and Lambourn. Private schools in the area include Thorngrove, Cheam, Elstree, Horris Hill, St Gabriel’s, and Downe House.
