Property Description

In the Chianti hills, not far from Figline Valdarno and Greve, ancient medieval abbey for sale. The property needs complete renovation but lends itself very well both as a potential luxury home and as a starting point for an exclusive boutique hotel.

The abbey is spread over three levels (totaling 5,000 m² – 53,800 ft²). The property, characterized by its old and very imposing stone walls covered with climbing ivy, has several entrances, two large cloisters (one with an original well) and a large, partly covered terrace overlooking the cloister and the valley.
In the part reserved for the church are stone floors, beautiful vaults and exposed beams. In front of the apse part of the ancient altar is still visible. The rooms are spacious and fully preserve their historicity.
In the wing used as living quarters there is a fireplace and frescoed walls, two living rooms, one with exposed beams and the other with vaulted ceilings, both embellished with large ancient fireplaces; next to it is an old office space. One of the rooms features beamed ceilings and some of the decorations are still visible. The large kitchen lends itself to either becoming a private eat-in kitchen or being converted into a professional kitchen for a hospitality business.
The most striking part is the cellar, characterized by beautiful columns, vaulted ceilings and floors made of stone slabs.
In a third wing are the old stables, also with vaulted ceilings. In a fourth wing are a large office/living room with a more modern fireplace, a kitchen equipped with an ancient fireplace, a large bedroom and a library with vaulted ceilings and frescoes.

The abbey was founded before 1040 as a hospice for pilgrims near the Via Cassia Adrianea, at a site known as Monte Scalajo. After donations from the lords of the nearby Castello di Cintoia, the complex grew rapidly, becoming a true Vallombrosan abbey. In 1212 the church was consecrated by Bishop Ranieri of Fiesole. During the 14th-17th centuries, major extensions were made, including new monastic rooms and cellars. As the number of monks decreased, the abbey was finally suppressed in 1776, and become a simple parish in 1785. The bell tower was destroyed by the Germans during World War II and only the foundations remain of it today. A terracotta coat of arms attributable to the Della Robbia school, dating from 1505, is still visible above the main entrance.

Also near the abbey are two large farmhouses (1,600 m² – 17,216 ft²), which are entirely in need of renovation but have great potential for development in the tourist sense as well.

All around the abbey and the farmhouses is a large expanse of land (about 14,000 m²) that could be transformed into a beautiful garden with an event area and pool. The remaining part of the estate (about 100.0 ha) is covered almost entirely by woods (89.1 ha) with some open glades scattered at various points of the estate (about 10.9 ha).

GEOGRAPHIC POSITION
The abbey is located in a very private setting, far from prying eyes. The unpaved road leading to the property leads to a small village with some basic amenities in about 15 minutes, while for more specific needs, one can reach Greve in Chianti or Figline Valdarno, where there are supermarkets, schools, and train stations. The Valdarno junction of the A1 motorway, which takes you to Florence in less than an hour, is about a 15-minute drive away.
