When arriving in Ängelsberg, whether by boat, train or car, your eyes are immediately drawn to the eminent Ulvaklev, standing tall on a cliffside next to lake Åmänningen. The so-called King of Norberg Zetterström, with interests in the nearby oil company, built the villa as a residence for his son. The commission to design the house went to the most prominent architect of the time, Isac Gustaf Clason. The result was a magnificent house completed in 1886, with prominent features of a knight's castle in the form of pinnacles and towers, or like a castle in the French countryside. The architectural style is neoclassicism with features of the French Renaissance where the austere brick facade is decorated by friezes and cornices, windows and doors with blue frames and verandas with extraordinary woodwork.

Over a bridge and through wrought iron gates you arrive at the villa's entrance. A welcoming porch leads into the vestibule and on to the lower hall. The impression is grand with much of the original interior still preserved such as floors, doors, wall panels, coffered ceilings and vaults with detailed decorations and paintings.

Facing the lake side is the beautiful dining room with majestic paneling and beautiful wall paintings. The center of attention is one of the villa's many elegant tiled stoves. This one, just like the remaining ten working tile stoves in the house, is magnificent in both color and shape. Next to the dining room is a tower room with characteristic round walls and windows facing the water. The curved staircase in the hall leads to the upper floor, where perhaps the most prominent room is the salon with several windows facing the lake, and the upper tower room with access to a west-facing balcony.

The villa is today a well-equipped residence with five rooms and kitchen on the entrance floor and six rooms on the upper floor. On the entrance floor there are two toilets, while the upper floor has two bathrooms. Modernization has been carried out with the utmost respect for the building's history, still present in each room. The attic has two bedrooms, a toilet and a large attic space, and the basement has become a place for relaxation with a sauna and shower in a calming room with a lake view.

The plot of approximately 1.5 hectares contains not only dramatic cliffs facing the lake, but also an orchard, large pine trees and flat areas for children to play. The coach house of 91 square meters lines the driveway and is built in Old Norse style, concurrent with the castle. It too has been modernized and today has an entrance floor with a kitchen and living room and an upper floor with a bedroom and bathroom. A garage building houses a car garage, an insulated workshop area and storage. In addition, the old playhouse has been moved to the beach and converted into a sauna.


HISTORY
At the end of the 19th century, the community of Ängelsberg developed along the western slope towards lake Åmänningen. A canal runs through the lake, connecting Mälaren with the towns in southern Dalarna. This allowed boat traffic to connect the iron mills with the steel mills at Lake Mälaren and further out to the Baltic Sea. The construction of the railway made the area even more accessible to the public and Ängelsberg became a popular holiday resort. The air was considered clean and health-promoting, and several houses in the community have been guest houses for visitors.

An artist colony led by Olof Arborelius operated here at the turn of the last century. The nearby Ängelsberg mill, now a world heritage site, was the significant workplace. On the island outside Ulvaklev, an oil refinery was built in the 1880s, which imported crude oil from Pennsylvania, and then supplied the industries of the surrounding towns with its products. The architect I G Clason was engaged to design no less than three impressive residential buildings in Ängelsberg. Ulvaklev is one of them.
