Location

Peaton House is locally regarded as one of the best houses on the peninsula, with wonderful views.   Nearby Cove, Kilcreggan and Peaton were established around the mid 19th century and initially were used mainly as destinations for summer houses, but as time went on, full time occupation took place. Originally there were ferries to Cove and Kilcreggan, but today Kilcreggan Pier remains the only traditional pier on the Clyde still in daily use. The peninsula has a rich architectural heritage of Victorian mansions, castles and cottages with famous architects such as Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, William Leiper and John Honeyman among the many to build impressive homes for wealthy clients. Today, many permanent homes remain, with villagers commuting to Glasgow by road in approximately 1 hour 10 minutes in normal driving conditions. Glasgow Airport can be reached in around 1 hour under normal driving conditions. Kilcreggan has its own primary school with the local secondary school in the nearest town of Helensburgh.   Lomond School in Helensburgh provides excellent private schooling at primary and secondary level. Helensburgh is renowned as one of Scotland's most desirable towns with first class local shopping, golf course and nearby Rhu Marina. Loch Lomond and the world renowned Loch Lomond Golf Club are approximately 20 miles away and some of Britain's most testing sailing waters can be found on Scotland's west coast.

Description

Peaton House is a Category B Listed Georgian country house, set in around 6 acres of grounds with gardens, tennis court, woodland and paddock. The house is thought to date from the early 19th century. The drive from the road leads through lawns flanked by fine trees to a gravelled parking area at the front of the house.    The beautiful entrance porch with half glazed door leads to the bright welcoming reception hallway, which has a curved stone staircase up to the upper level, and a flagstone floor. To the left of the hallway is the sitting room, a comfortable room with windows to the front and door to the rear. There is access from the sitting room to the conservatory from where there are the most breathtaking views in all directions. From the sitting room there is also access to the breakfasting kitchen which has a range of floor and wall units, a SMEG range cooker and windows overlooking the rear gardens and beyond. From the kitchen and also the hallway is the formal dining room with windows to the front. The pantry, utility room, two WC/cloakrooms and storage cupboards complete the ground floor.   The elegant and bright Georgian stone staircase leads to the first floor landing, off which is the formal drawing room which is a special highlight of Peaton House, with its windows on three sides and Juliet balcony with exceptional views, along with a period fireplace. On the first floor are also three bedrooms, a study and two bathrooms. A staircase then leads to the second floor where there are three further bedrooms and an additional bathroom.
The grounds of Peaton House extend to about 6 acres in all, including a paddock and woodland. The house sits on high ground with spectacular views over the garden and beyond to the Firth of Clyde in all directions. The grassy banks are covered in flowers depending on the season, with an abundance of colourful rhododendrons, daffodils and snowdrops, trees and bushes. A large expanse of lawn includes a pond, while to the rear is the tennis court. The woodland area includes a pathway leading to a paddock at the front. There is a stone outbuilding presently used as an artist's studio, with store rooms and mezzanine studio and attached garage.
