In 1902, the villa was ready for occupation. It is thought that a wealthy family from Malmö saw the potential of this perfect location on the outskirts of the city. At that time, Fridhem was an exclusive area for Malmö's wealthy. People travelled here by horse-drawn omnibus from the city centre. In 1907, the horse was replaced by tram no. 4, which ran directly to Fridhemsplan. A journey that feels short by today's standards, but at the time was truly a trip out ‘to the countryside'!
The villa was part of the first wave of new developments comprising around 40 villas built around the turn of the century; of these, around 30 remain today. A second phase of development took place during the 1910s. At that time, the cream of Malmoe's wholesalers and industrial entrepreneurs built lavish and large villas. Renowned architects were commissioned. The houses were designed in various styles of Art Nouveau and National Romanticism.
To put the year 1902 into perspective, violent demonstrations were taking place in Stockholm over the issue of universal right to vote. That same year, the law on universal self-assessment was passed, and the modern tax system came into use. These were momentous events for society as a whole, yet they may well have passed the family by as they took possession of their beautiful new home on Caprigatan.
The echoes of history are constantly present in the abundance of beautiful period features, such as period parquet flooring, elegant windows and bay windows, ornate columns and impressive ceiling heights. The ceilings are, of course, richly adorned with stucco. This, combined with the modernisation the villa has undergone, creates a home for those who have the means to invest in a genuine Fridhem villa.
The rear of the house is framed by a wonderful veranda, and terraces on various levels can be found throughout the garden. The inviting pool area is a natural gathering place – and in summer, this is the oasis where we gather friends and family for socialising and spending time together. After a dip in the pool, all the city's attractions are practically on your doorstep! A combination of the villa garden and the city vibe that is quite unique!
The living areas are situated on the home's inviting ground floor. The living rooms are just as you'd expect, complete with all the features you're used to! A lovely kitchen suitable for any occasion, with a natural gathering point around the large gas hob and, of course, a substantial kitchen island perfect for cooking together.
Upstairs, we find the home's more private areas. Here too, the flooring and ceiling height match the villa's exterior, creating a cohesive environment between the floors. There is a large ‘master suite' with all the expected features, an ‘en suite' bathroom and a ‘walk-in wardrobe'. In the hallway, there is a large shared bathroom and access to a beautiful balcony. There are three further bedrooms, one of which has an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Perfect for those with an au pair.
There is an attic area that can be used by family members looking for a quiet moment, a place to relax a little, or – for those of you with younger children – as a playroom and cosy retreat.
The basement, which in days gone by was of course the servants' workplace, has been modernised and converted into a large family room with ‘proper windows', creating a lovely, light and airy atmosphere. The perfect cinema room and a space that is well separated from the rest of the house – ideal for teenagers looking to get away from it all... A space for working from home has been prepared here. A spacious office for undisturbed home working. The basement has a separate entrance from the garden. It also houses all the laundry facilities, a sauna area and more.
